Domaine La Toupie Sur Un Fil Rouge 2016, Maury Sec AOP. 15%

Maury is a historic Appellation, renowned in France for it's sweet fortified wines. However it is becoming less fashionable and sales have declined. Some progressive winemakers, such as Jerome Collas, are now making some fantastic dry red wines in the region. There are very old bush vines that produce wonderfully intense wines. Only the best are allowed to take the Appellation Maury Sec (dry).

A wine with lovely sweet fruit flavours derived from Grenache Noir (70%), Syrah (20%) and Mourvedre (5%) grape varieties. Soft tannins, spicy notes, an intensity derived from very low yields (only 18 hectos/hectare). Excellent with roast meats and cheese.

This is what The Wine Gang had to say about the 2013 wine

The rugged hills of the Roussillon region run to the Mediterranean sea in the deep south of France, close to the Spanish border. Here the fame of the Maury appellation was founded on fortified wines: sweet, Port-style wines made from old, unirrigated vineyards of mostly Grenache. Now, more producers are making dry Maury, and this is a beefy but plush and fruity example of great quality, haunting creamy raspberry and strawberry notes mix with spice and wild herbs, before a powerful, full palate of smooth fruit that is deep and sweet, with fine tannins and acidity.
